Six Types of Household Paints

The right paint can change your house into the home you desire. However, paints are available in different types, each with its own unique functionality. Some paints work well for the interiors, while others are ideal for the exteriors.

Here is what you need to know about the various types of paints.

 1. Oil Paint

Oil paints typically work as a finish coat, undercoat, or primer. Initially, oil paints were popular because they were durable and could last a long time on most surfaces.

But advancements in water-based paints have eclipsed these qualities. Still, oil paints provide a rich finish and have exceptional water-resistant properties.

People often use oil paints on metal structures, windows, doors, and walls. The process of applying oil paints is fairly straightforward, and the resulting painted surfaces are easy to clean.

However, oil paint is not ideal for humid conditions. In addition, you can expect the oil paint to take a long time to dry completely.

 2. Enamel Paint

Enamel paint results from the addition of lead or zinc to varnish. The paint also includes various pigments that increase the variety of colors. The main advantage of enamel paint is that it’s easy to clean and forms a hard coat. Enamel paints are also waterproof and will retain their color for a long time.

 3. Water-Based Paint

Water-based paint is popular because of its durability, although it’s not as durable as oil-based paint. The paint will dry more quickly than most other paints, and you can apply it with a roller or brush. Moreover, water-based paints are environmentally friendly since they don’t emit any harmful chemicals.

One of the most common types of water-based paint is emulsion paint. This paint is typically put on walls and ceilings. People prefer emulsion paint because the paint has low reflection capabilities, making it perfect for ceilings with lighting fixtures.

Silk and matt are the two most popular types of emulsion paint. In particular, silk has an easy cleaning process, and you can use a roller or brush to apply it. Silk emulsion paint has a relatively greater sheen than matt emulsion paint but may display some imperfections.

 4. Cement Paint

Cement paint usually comes in powder form and is easily mixed with water to create paint consistency. While colored or white cement forms the core of the paint, manufacturers often add additives, accelerators, and pigments.

The addition of multiple ingredients makes cement paint waterproof and durable. As a result, you can apply cement paint on rough surfaces that experience a lot of wear and tear.

 5. Bituminous Paint

This type of paint comes from tar or asphalt, and you can get it in black color. Alkali resistance and waterproofing are the main advantages of bituminous paint.

But you shouldn’t use bituminous paint if your surfaces are constantly exposed to sunlight. That is because sunlight can cause bituminous paint to deteriorate.

 6. Distemper Paint

Distemper paint is a combination of water, lime, chalk, and a few coloring agents. The paint is ideal for plastered surfaces that require paint without any primer. Once you apply the paint, you can expect it to withstand exposure to sunlight without cracking.

Another advantage of distemper paint is that it is very economical, and you can use it on exterior and interior walls. However, if the paint comes into contact with water, it can easily get wet. Hence, it tends to come off quickly during rainfall.

Choosing the right type of paint is only half the journey. The next step is to find a qualified painter to help you with the paint job.
